文╱佛門寺提供
美國舊金山佛門寺秉持佛法慈悲的精神,以及導師 上惟下覺大和尚的諄諄教誨,自二○○九年起,舉辦「菩提子夏日學園」,以「中台四箴行」為營訓,將「敬、慈、和、真」融合於各式課程活動中,啟發大眾的菩提心。
本年度夏日學園,自七月十四日至十七日舉辦,共有五十二位小菩提子,在法師、老師、隊輔師、義工及護法菩薩們的護持下,藉由課程活動學習,深植菩提種子。課程內容包含:禪修靜坐、過堂行儀、佛門巡禮、健康太極、素食營養金字塔、洗手衛生、童軍訓練、智慧法語背誦、反省日記等。

以《弟子規》為輔助教材,略分為四篇章:恭敬篇、自律責任篇、慈悲智慧篇及學文利他篇。讓小菩提子在背誦中薰修「敬慈和真」的意義,在學校、家庭中具體落實。每堂課上下課時,由隊輔師呼班,帶領小菩提子向師長行禮,長養恭敬心;營隊期間三餐素食,長養慈悲心;互相幫助,長養和睦心;專注投入,長養真誠心。良善品德的播種,未來必定開福慧花、結菩提果,為自己的人生、也為周遭的人帶來無限光明。
活動心得
學童 Erin Koziel╱ I learned about dharma and Buddhism from summer school, and I also learned how to be mindful when I practice meditation. I felt peaceful when I offered a candle to the Buddha. “Truthfulness” is the group I belonged to at that time. I’d like to practice “Truthfulness” by being honest to people and to myself.(我不僅上到關於佛學的課程,也學到如何在靜坐時練習專注。佛前供燈時,我的內心是平靜的。我是此次夏日學園真誠隊的一員,不論是對別人或自己,都要坦誠以對,這也是我要落實的目標。)
學童 Sophia Teicher╱I learned how to practice giving by being generous to others and not expecting anything in return. I also learned how to create a harmonious environment by being kind and respectful to everyone.(我學習到布施是無所求的奉獻,而非有所求的給予。同時也學到,心存仁慈及恭敬,是造就和諧環境的基石。)
隊輔師 Robert Raffel╱ The Bodhiseed summer school provided that opportunity by providing a unique and important foundation that points the Bodhiseeds in the right direction so they can live happy lives and make the world a better place.(菩提子夏日學園為學子奠定了獨特及重要的學習基礎,也為學子提供正確的方向,使他們的未來能夠擁有更好的生活及整體環境的改善。)
義工 Cynthia Hudson╱This past week helped me begin to understand the meaning of harmony. The environment at Buddha Gate enabled me to be harmonious in my thoughts – staying calm and flexible about each task that was assigned. With a calm mind it was a positive experience to be conscious of my speech and be mindful of how it impacted others. This in turn allowed me to be mindful of all my actions when doing a task or even more important, offering guidance to support others accomplishments aiding their contribution rather than rushing to complete the task myself.(過去這一個禮拜的活動幫助我開始了解「和合」的意義。佛門寺的環境能讓我調和自己的想法──對於被安排的坡務,都能保持平靜、靈活以對。以平靜的心,正面地覺察自己所說的話如何影響他人。這也讓我在做一件事情時,覺察自己的行為,更重要的是,提供協助、幫助別人完成他們的發心,而不只是趕快做完自己的部分。)
義工 Jenny Blackman╱真心希望孩子能記得在夏日學園中所學到的一切──特別是道德。佛門寺對我來說是神聖的地方,在馬不停蹄、充滿壓力的生活中,一處喘息、平靜的處所。僅是坐在觀音像前,就能感受到寧靜,讓我回到當下,這是忙碌生活中經常忽略的。現今的教育不再強調道德觀念,感謝佛門寺讓孩子學習他們最缺乏的教育。
